Am I eligible to pay no VAT?

If you are disabled or have a mobility need, you would normally be exempt from paying any VAT. You can follow any of the links below to the Governments website to find out more.

What is the difference between 'road' and 'pavement' scooters or wheelchairs and do I need a license?

You donít need a license to drive a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair, but you may have to register it with DVLA if its to be used on the road.
Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs come in 2 'class' categories:
  • 'Class 2' electric scooters or chairs - these can't be used on the road (except where there isn't a pavement) and have a maximum speed of 4mph. You do not have to register these.
  • 'Class 3' electric scooters and chairs these can be used on the road, and have a maximum speed of 4mph off the road, and 8mph on the road. You need to register these with DVLA.

Do I need Insurance?

It depends if its a road or pavement scooter. Although you donít legally need insurance for a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair, if your going onto a main road, it would be silly not to have insurance. Either way, once you leave your gate, you need insurance for not just others safety but your own and protection against the inevitable of being sued for thousands. Read more about scooter insurance here.
